A quote of inspiration

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales to what lies inside of you.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Each week I will highlight something about Rotary that all Rotarians should know or be aware of:

WOMEN IN ROTARY

Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law which prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations. The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club’s charter merely for inducting women into the club. The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a “business purpose” and are in some ways public-type organizations. This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar “public accommodation” statutes.
The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the “male only” provision for all of Rotary. (11)

Very timely in light of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.

If you are like me, I look forward to the new Rotarian Magazine showing up in the mail. I wasn’t always like that but sometime back I realized there was some outstanding information in the magazine that you don’t see anywhere else. Try opening the magazine, breeze through page by page, and make sure to read at least one article each month. I am sure you will find after time you will be reading it cover to cover over the month and like me looking forward to next month’s issue.

As you might have noticed on the cover of the September issue, after 110 years of being named THE ROTARIAN the magazine, is now called ROTARY. The name recognizes the breadth of the organization’s membership in addition to supporting the organization’s goal of growing awareness of Rotary’s global brand.

MAKES ME PROUD TO BE A ROTARIAN IN THE ROTARY CLUB OF ST. LOUIS

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

District Governor Tom Drennan visited us last Thursday to give us a district update on how Rotary is dealing with the pandemic. Tom is an enthusiastic guy with varying interest both in and out of Rotary. Our two past District Governors Rose Cooper and Rick Tinucci were in the audience. Both have given much time and service to our club, our district and Rotary International. A big shout out to Tom, Rose, and Rick.

This week’s program will be the “Changing of the Guard” featuring Past President Bob Garagiola and presented by Mark Rubinelli and possibly other select “guest”. Be sure to be there either live or via zoom.

We are continuing to work to make the zoom presentations better every week. Please let Joan know if you have and suggestions and she will pass them on to the MAC who is handling the production of the video.

ZOOM BROADCAST WILL CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST UNTIL THE END OF SEPTEMBER FOR THOSE THAT CANNOT MAKE THE MEETINGS IN PERSON.

Remember to complete the new pre-meeting online registration starting with this meeting that Joan will send out. This pertains to both those attending live and virtually. Although this is not mandatory (yet) please respond to the email to give us a good idea of attendance. It worked very well last week.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO WORK AT BEING HEALTHY DURING THESE TRYING TIMES

“Call a Rotarian”

– Past President Bob Garagiola kicked off this program on April 7th 2020. Let’s see if we can keep this going in support of Bob. I think this is a good gesture and will help keep us connected. And you will feel good just to make a “personal” connection. I know I have and if you do also, you’ll be amazed at the results.

Finally, if you have questions, concerns, or ideas regarding Club 11 please contact either me or our office
