ROTARY GOLF LEAGUE

FOREST HILLS COUNTRY CLUB

August 12, 2020

The weather in most of the St. Louis area gave us heavy downpours with flooding in many areas. I had a couple Rotarian golfers texting me on the status of the outing scheduled for 1:30 at the beautiful Forest Hills Country Club. Since our league has had the last 3 golf outings shortened by rain, I am sure everyone assumed this would be the same. They forget that Terry Werner was the organizer of our first 4 outings and everyone knows the track record Terry has with the rain. NOT THIS TIME. As I was heading west on 44 toward West County, I noticed blue skies in the distance. As soon as I hit 270 heading toward 40/64 the sun was out and there was barely a hint of cloudiness. OH MY!!! I remembered telling someone a week before that I guaranteed NO RAIN for the Forest Hills outing. Was my promise going to come true? Apparently, they had no rain in Chesterfield that day and the weather for golf was almost perfect.

A little history on our venue this day:

Forest Hills Country Club officially opened the Clubhouse and the 18-hole course called “The Championship” in December 1964. The original course architect was Chick Adams but the course was later fine-tuned by golf course designers Dick Nugent and Keith Foster. As recently as 2011, the greens were re-seeded with the new Bentgrass variety A1A4 and an advanced drainage system was installed. These upgrades provide an ideal putting surface that is very weather tolerant for the Midwest temperature fluctuations. In the winter of 2017-18, the bunkers were renovated to include the Premier White™ Course Sand adding the perfect play that both our golfers and our maintenance team desire.

This is exactly what we got. It is a gorgeous piece of property with tree lined fairways in a secluded setting. Our host for the outing was Nick Riordan. I think Nick enjoyed spending the day with the Rotarians. BTW, Nick is the nephew of our own Jack Windish. Thanks to Nick for hosting our outing.

We had 16 golfers for the day with 9 staying for dinner.

The medalist for the day was or host Nick Riordan with a nice 76.

Most stayed for an hour or so of fellowship after golf at a very nice horseshoe shaped outside bar on their patio. It allowed plenty of room for social distancing during these times. We then went inside for dinner and awards.

Dinner comprised of a mixed green salad with berries, Chicken Piccata with twice baked potato and marvelous chocolate chip cookies for dessert. The awards followed and golf balls distributed to those shown above.

Special recognition to a Kevin Shaughnessy who participated in our golf league for the first time. Kevin, hopefully you enjoyed the experience.

Our next outing will be September 16th at the Country Club of Saint Albans as a reschedule of a previous outing. Terry Werner will run the outing. Terry, you will have to keep working on this until you get it right.

Our golf league really has great fellowship and played on some of the nicest golf courses in the St. Louis area. As one of the Rotarians said that night – this golf league is one of the best bargains out there. Try to make one of the 4 remaining outings.

Hope to see you then,

Kent Steinbrueck
