Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best, Rotary’s official mottoes, can be traced back to the early days of the organization.
In 1911, the second Rotary convention, in Portland, Oregon, USA, approved He Profits Most Who Serves Best as the Rotary motto. The wording was adapted from a speech that Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon delivered to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared that “only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best.”
The Portland gathering also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During an outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. Pinkham invited Rotary founder Paul Harris, who also was on the trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase Service, Not Self was met with great enthusiasm.
At the 1950 Rotary International Convention in Detroit, Michigan, USA, two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified to They Profit Most Who Serve Best in 2004 and to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best, in 2010.

Being a Rotarian means serving your community, networking, making friends, and building international relationships. Through Rotary, you have the opportunity to expand your leadership skills and achieve your goals. Get involved in a committee, sit with someone different every week, when asked to serve on a Board position treat it as a special invitation to not only serve but also enlighten yourself. You will find you will gain much more personally than you can only dream of.
As we come out of the COVID 19 this year, let’s try to work adding to our membership. If everyone just asks one close friend or business associate, we will be able to grow in 2021.

Last Thursday was Opening Day in St. Louis. Although it just felt a little different that in past years it was still a start to getting back to “normal” as the Cardinals did have almost 15,000 in attendance. As more people get vaccines, hopefully we can get back to doing more things, especially outside.
On Thursday we had Ron Jacober and Bob Tiemann as the program telling us about Immortal Memories in Cardinal History. They had been here previously but they had so much more to give us, we invited them back.
Speaking of Opening Day and the Cardinals, this Thursday we have Bill DeWitt III coming back to give us a State of The Baseball Club and also talk about getting through the Covid 19 situation from a business view. It has been quite awhile since Bill was last in, but I know I speak for many, we all look forward to what he has to say.
Bill DeWitt III has been the President of the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Club since 2008 and has been instrumental in the succession of keeping the Cardinals one of the most successful teams in baseball.
