Captain Carl Lane - Week 17 Alleygations -106th season

106th Season – Week 17 Alleygations -Carl Lane ~ January 20, 2025

This was a historic night at Olivette Lanes. One notable event occurred during the day as a new President was sworn in, but perhaps more noteworthy was the fact that the Decker team was the first team to finish bowling. Now mind you, they only had 3 bowlers and no opposition at all since their Jones team opponent was a no show (THE WHOLE TEAM) and they barely beat the next finisher. Rumors were rampant linking the absence of Ralph Decker to Jones team members, but you can draw your own conclusions. Kayla Jones offered little explanation for the team absence as she said in a last minute email “Team jones will not be attending tonight. Sorry for the late notice…wanted to give everyone a chance at first place.” Was Kayla generously offering another team a chance for first place? OR was the team mad because they lost two games the prior week and still needed time with the therapist? OR was the team secretly meeting with Ralph (to allegedly) watch the Notre Dame football game? OR did each member have a legitimate excuse to miss the game? In spite of this drama, a number of bowlers broke the 200 barrier: David Cowell (232), Wade Weistreich (214), Don Klackner (213), Kent Steinbrueck (212), Terry Werner (204), and Bob Zangas (203).

Team Lane retained its tenuous hold on first place by besting the Werner Team 14-8. Kent Steinbrueck and Jack Windish (who made a 6-7-10 split) spearheaded the effort, while Vic Difate, Tom Keeline, and Don Klacker made creditable showings for Team Werner who currently hold fifth place in the standings.

Enough has been said regarding the Jones/Decker matchup. But for some reason the week results only credited the Decker Team with 10 points. I guess even bowling with no opposition the team performance did not impress the League statistician.

On most nights Team Driver would have prevailed with Matt Weiss rolling 658 (he also made a 5-10 split which is not that unusual but Matt likes to see his name in print), Mike Reagan 610, and Ken Schuman 650. These scores resulted in only 4 points since Team Weistreich burned up the alleys. Wade had a 689, Chris Wilson 672, and Mike Coleman 630. The18 points earned propelled the team to third place, and the hapless Driver Team is entrenched in eigth place.

The Baker/Cowell match featured the return of Katie Lamarsh and Bob Schuster. Opening day jitters complemented with rust from the long layoff resulted in subpar performances by both. However, they bowled on opposite teams and their scores effectively cancelled each other out, so no harm done. The Cowell Team exhibited their usual consistent high performance. David rolled 614 (he also won $70 in the 50/50 AGAIN), Ralph Zuke 669 (hard to understand why he was so “hot” having worn shorts on this 8 degree night), and Bob Zangas with 654. On the Baker side Chad Baker had a commendable 658, and it should be noted that the game 2 score for Bob Barnes surpassed the total scores of game 1 and 3. Bob did convert the 3-10 and as he returned to the table he was quoted as saying, “nothing to it.”

Respectively Submitted,
Carl Lane

PS : the League standings were updated to reflect  22 points for Team Decker
