Rotary Golf League Report
Algonquin Country Club-August 1, 2023
Twenty Club 11 golf aficionados gathered at historic Algonquin Golf Club on August 1st, hosted by our very own Flip Cady and Harold Kalde. Thanks Flip and Harold!
Jeromy Fritz brought along a guest, Mike Busalaki, who was warmly welcomed by the group.
Thankfully, it was not your typical St. Louis August summer day, with a high of only 85 degrees and no rain. Unfortunately, good weather did nothing to prevent a large percentage of the participants from consistently whacking their shots into the rough, which, as one player observed, “haven’t been mowed since this place opened in 1903”.
Nevertheless, multiple stellar performances were posted, to wit:
Closest to the pin hole #8:
1st place: Mike Regan- 10’-10”
2nd place: Mike Busalaki-22’-0”
3rd place: Steve LaFara-33’-3”
Longest drive 67 and under: Mike Regan
Longest drive 68 and over: Flip Cady
Individual winners:
A flight
1st place: Terry Werner–88/69 –Terry’s round was also low net score of the day!
2nd place: Harold Kalde—91/72
3rd place: Adam McNutt—97/77
Championship flight
1st place: Jim Brenardini—85/73
2nd place: Mike Regan—87/76
3rd place: Jack Windish—94/77
Team winners:
In First place, posting a score of 134, earning them $15 each, the team of Ankrom/McNutt/Baebler/Weiss.
Second place, also posting a 134, but getting pushed to the silver position in a scorecard playoff, was the team of LaFara/Bernardini/Guilfoy/Windish. Net worth of the guys in this group increased by $10 tonight.
In Third place, carding a 136, was the team of Critzas/Regan/Kalde/Steinbrueck. These guys pocketed five dollars each. They also needed to go 3 holes into a scorecard playoff to come out ahead of the team of Cady/Conner/Werner/Poe, who also posted a 136.
After enjoying an outstanding barbecue buffet served by the excellent Algonquin staff, the handicap committee retired to the veranda for post-dinner drinks, cigars, and a critique of the play that day.
Special thanks go out to Flip Cady for providing us with several bottles of wine from his private cellar!
The Rotary Golf League will again be collecting bottles of wine to auction off at the Rotary Golf Charity Tournament at Forest Park on August 30th. Several members brought their donations to the dinner, so we are off to a great start!
Our next outing will be at Forest Hills on August 15th, hosted by Adam McNutt.
Keep it in the fairway!
