28 golfers descended upon Sunset Country Club on October 4th for our last outing of the Rotary Golf season, and the much anticipated annual Awards dinner.
Our hosts were Matt Wilson and Cris Conner. Bob Bauer was a potential host, but he is still trying to recover from celebrating his first career hole-in-one two weeks ago. Nice shooting Bob!
Chris Sarandos and Brad Steinbrueck, guests of Kent Steinbrueck, also joined us for what may have been the nicest weather we have seen all season!
After enjoying an elegant surf and turf dinner prepared and served by the excellent Sunset staff, the Awards Ceremonies commenced.
Winners and highlights for this outing:
Closest to the pin hole #4:
1st place: James “Bullseye” Webster- 6 inches. You read that right; 6 inches! “Narrowly avoided financial ruin” was his analysis of that well struck shot.
2nd place: Bob Garagiola-6’-7”. A potential winning shot on any day but this one.
3rd place: Steve LaFara-16’-3”
Longest drive 67 and under: Kent Steinbrueck.
Longest drive 68 and over: Bob Zangas. Not to take anything away from the “longest” part of this, but Bob was the only one 68 and over who managed to keep it in the fairway….
Individual winners:
B flight
1st place: Wade Weistreich 101/69.6
2nd place: Adam McNutt 98/74.5
3rd place: Bob Kocher 112/75.4
A flight
1st place: Terry Werner 84/65.6 –Terry’s round was also low net score of the day!
2nd place: Earl Poe 96/74.6
3rd place: Ken Schuman 97/76.9
Championship flight
1st place: Kent Steinbrueck 83/70.7
2nd place: Jim Bernardini 88/76.5
3rd place: Flip Cady 82/76.8
Team winners:
In First place, with a highly scrutinized and dubious score of 121, earning them $15 each, the team of Poe/Werner/Wilson/Weistreich.
Second place, one stroke back at 122 (and increasing their net worth by $10 each) was the team of Schuman/Steinbrueck/blind draw Wade Weistreich/blind draw Blake Critzas
In Third place, carding a 123, was the team of Doug Lorenz/Webster/Zangas/Garagiola These guys pocketed five dollars each.
And just to prove that there is no pencil whipping going on, in dead last place with an unspeakably wretched score of 136, was the team of Conner/Weiss/Windish/Wendling. Nobody whose last name ends with a W played well in that group.
SEASON AWARDS
Mike Regan took over the floor for the presentation of the Season winners. Mike first recognized outgoing League President Terry Werner, past President Blake Critzas, and thanked Earl Poe for his continued service as League Treasurer. We couldn’t make this League work without these guys!
Championship Flight- for like the 16th time, Steve LaFara. The Championship trophy is now appropriately named after Steve.
A Flight- hotly pursued on the final day by Werner, Schuman, Wendling and Conner, Earl Poe remained steadfast and takes home the A flight trophy!
B Flight- enjoying a great season and finishing strong was B Flight winner Adam McNutt. As a reward for his stellar play, he gets a trophy, and was also anointed with a Presidents position for next year’s golf season. Thanks for stepping up Adam!
Most Improved Player- for sharpening his handicap by 19%, Terry Werner takes home the George Krieger Memorial Trophy for Most Improved Player.
Kocher Award for Fellowship- often voted the most fun person to play golf with, Matt Weiss was the second recipient of this very meaningful recognition.
Much of the group then retired to the veranda for post-dinner cocktails and cigars. Nothing else to report from that, since I don’t recall most of it…
Thanks to all of our Rotary Golf League Members and Presidents for a fabulous 2022!
